Washer fluid sensor – Peugeot RCZ

Even though I recently and very unexpectedly sold my beloved Peugeot RCZ, I still had some video footage of it from February 2019, changing the washer fluid sensor.

The weird thing about this is that the washer fluid still keeps coming when you actuate the lever. Even when the fluid level is almost full, the onboard computer is showing the warning message “Screen wash fluid level too low”. I checked for any leaks coming from the reservoir or the hoses, but couldn’t find any. This meant to me that the source of the problem was likely to be electronical.

Long story short, watch the video to learn how to change the sensor. ๐Ÿ™‚

Channel Update

Big change ahead

It’s been almost half a year since my last Youtube video and there are several reasons for it. The main one being the fact that I started working on the restoration of my third generation Pontiac Firebird. Parallel to its restoration I intent to convert into a replica of the KITT, the Knight Industries Two Thousand of the 80’s TV show Knight Rider.

Moving from the RCZ to the Firebird will undoubtedly shift the focus of the channel. But it doesn’t mean there won’t be any further videos and articles on the RCZ. However, the MotorScotti website, YouTube channel and Facebook page have always been about my passion for cars and motorcycles. For the time being, the Pontiac is in pole position. Watch the video and you’ll know what’s to be expected over the next several months! ๐Ÿ™‚

Changing the coolant / antifreeze in your car

Keep it cool

Here’s something that you don’t have to do everyday or even every year. Making sure that the coolant level and quality are at the optimum point is part of every regular inspection. Because the coolant or antifreeze is a closed circuit and thus not supposed to leak or lower over time (in theory).

Anyway, in some cars it’s supposed to last a lifetime, in others the manufacturer recommends to change it every X amount of years. On my RCZ, the coolant level slightly lowered over the five years I owned it so far and I topped it up with tap water. Naturally, that dilutes the actual antifreeze substances. So when I saw that it was low again, I decided to flush the system and put all new coolant in it.

At this point you might ask yourselfย  whether my car has a coolant leak somewhere. I could never find any and even had a Peugeot workshop have a close look at it. They couldn’t find anything wrong with it either and just mentioned that some of it might just evaporate through the valve on the overflow reservoir cap…

Anyhow, long story short. The following video shows you how to change the coolant on your car. Although this is shown on my RCZ, the procedure is pretty much identical on any car! ๐Ÿ™‚

Installing a rear view camera – Peugeot RCZ

A whole new point of view

Ever since I installed the android color screen autoradio I knew that this would only be the beginning, a start to a new chapter of my RCZ. Not only would I now have the possibility to look at a nice modern touch screen radio, it would also be the foundation for further improvements of my car. So, what is the first logical step to install when you have a proper screen in your car? Exactly, a reverse camera! Find out how to install it in the video below! ๐Ÿ™‚

PS: Bear in mind that although I’m presenting this installion on the RCZ, the reverse camera itself is not car brand specific, neither are the cable connections. Connection wise you can proceed the same way regardless of the car you have as long as you have the same cables on your reverse camera harness.

Engine fault: repair needed – the oxygen sensor & bad fuel

A lot of work for nothing

When your RCZ error message shows “Engine fault: repair needed”, many things can be at the heart of the issue. If you’ve watched the first episode of this saga, you know what I’ve already tried to fix the issue. As usual for modern cars, it’s always best to get a readout of the problem by connecting the car to an OBD2 diagnostic tool. But what if the read out of that tool is not accurate enough and you end up changing something like, let’s say the oxygen sensor and it turns out that that’s not even the problem? Darn… So now what? Find out in the following video. ๐Ÿ™‚

Engine fault: repair needed – the recirculation valve

The long search for the fault

Sometimes when you think everything is fine with your RCZ and you’re driving along not looking for any trouble, that’s when it hits you – an error message comes up the display..! More specifically “Engine fault: repair needed”. In case this happens to your RCZ or Peugeot in general or Citroรซn or even to your luxurious DS, it can mean many things – it’s basically a very general fault code for your engine. However, it doesn’t always mean that the fault origin is to be found in the engine. Find out one example in the following video! ๐Ÿ™‚

Installing an android color screen autoradio – Peugeot RCZ

Catapulting the RCZ into the 21st century

The RCZ is a well built and styling little GT car. The kind of style that has a real potential to become a classic collector’s item in a few years, just like the 504 Cabriolet and the 406 Coupรฉ. However, when you look at the dashboard, there’s just one thing that makes it look quite dated today, even when it came out in 2010: The center control unit. Just look for yourself:

Clearly, some cars are best kept original and some just need ‘a little help’. How about keeping the original style but adding some of the modern day gadgets like a color screen and android technology with all the apps you can have on a smartphone. Speaking of which, this opens a gate to whole new world! What world? Find out by watching the below video. ๐Ÿ™‚

Transmission oil change – Peugeot RCZ

Shifting gears smoothly again

Everyone willing to maintain their car will either have it serviced by a technician or maybe even service it themselves. A general service includes checking the overall functionalities and state of the car, as well as changing the engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, maybe a fuel filter and occasionally and every four to five years, the coolant. But what about the gearbox / transmission? Most cars this days don’t even have a gearbox oil dipstick. Most manufacturers these days call them “sealed gearboxes with lifetime oil”… Right, the engine oil is supposed to be changed regularely but the gearbox oil will last forever? Nice fairy tale!

I changed the gearbox oil of my RCZ at around 90’000 km and trust me, it was worth it. I’ll probably do it again every 60’000 km. But how does it work? It’s actually quite simple. Watch the below video and see for yourself! ๐Ÿ™‚

Bleeding the brakes – Peugeot RCZ

Brake fluid 101

What makes good brakes? Sure, you have all the mechanical components like the master cylinder, the brake rotor, caliper, pads and so one. However, none of that would ever really run properly if it wasn’t for the brake fluid. The brake fluid is used to transfer the brake force you apply on the pedal into pressure on the brake pads that eventually push against the rotor and through friction slow the wheel down.

Even though the brake fluid circuit is closed, there are several occasions which require it to be changed or at least topped up. For example, when installing new brake pads or a complete new set of brakes or simply when the fluid has gone past its expiration date. As a matter of fact, brake fluids are hygroscopic (water absorbing), which means they absorb moisture from the atmosphere under normal humidity levels. The RCZ such as many other passenger cars uses DOT 4 brake fluid, which is supposed to be changed every two years.

Find out how to do it in the following video! ๐Ÿ™‚
